Tragedy Strikes Himachal Pradesh: Cloudburst Claims 13 Lives

In a sudden and devastating event, a cloudburst hit near Samej and Bagi bridges in Himachal Pradesh, overwhelming the area and leading to catastrophic consequences.

The incident, occurring late on Wednesday, resulted in the loss of 13 lives, with many more individuals washing away as operations to rescue missing persons continue.

Rescue Efforts in Full Swing

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), led by Commandant Baljinder Singh of the 14th Battalion, sprang into action following the disaster. Singh shared, “This year, we ensured timely deployment to remote locations in Himachal Pradesh to mitigate rescue operation delays.”

Despite the swift response, the search for survivors remains challenging, with one person still unaccounted for among those initially reported missing.


Historic Rainfall Hits Region

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded unprecedented rainfall levels across the state, further escalating the situation. Joginder Nagar in Mandi district experienced the heaviest downpour, receiving 110mm of rainfall within 24 hours.

The IMD issued an orange alert for the lower Himalayan districts, including Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Chamba, and Mandi, preparing residents for severe weather conditions.

Kuldeep Srivastava, head of IMD Himachal Pradesh, outlined the severity of the weather pattern: “Nearly 75 percent of areas received between 30mm to 50mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, with some districts experiencing heavy rainfall.”
